Cedar Point Rougarou Media Day and Opening Day 05/08/2015

Since we attended the Winter Chill Out off season tour at Cedar Point we were entered into a drawing for passes to the Media Day event for Rougarou. We had a 1 in 6 chance and we won! We were each able to bring one guest along for media day so here’s a look at Rougarou media day and Cedar Point opening day!

DSC05737
Showing up nice and early at 5 AM for media day there were a few snacks for us to try. The Rougarou ice cream was amazing and the Rougacool Freestyle pop was interesting to say the least. Sadly they were not offering RougaBREW to try but they did have a display of it.

The park is empty besides the Rougarou area.

The sign all lit up which has howling sound effects nearby. Very neat in the dark.

In the beginning of the morning they were assigning rows but after a while it was open seating.

And a look at the restraints for the ride. Very similar to other floorless coasters over the shoulder but they don’t seem to click as much until they lock. Not quite like the old school B&M over the shoulder restraints like Raptor. Could also be since they are brand new.

Rougarou coming off the mid course break run. It was here where the ride would come to a halt as Mantis but it only slows the train a tad now, so the second half is much faster than before, and provides some surprising moments of air time.
DSC05785
The corkscrew, you might get your head banged here but still much more comfortable than Mantis was.

The fog awaits!

So what did I think of Rougarou?!? Well it’s a much more improved ride now versus the original Mantis roller coaster. It definitely rides smoother than before and as I mentioned the second half is faster than it was before. Mantis had a great layout but the stand up concept never worked right so it’s amazing to see that it could be converted into a floorless coaster. Kraken at Sea World Orlando was the best floorless coaster I had been on, and after riding Rougarou it’s definitely right up there with Kraken. Also to go from a ride that we wouldn’t ride too much at Cedar Point to now a most likely ride is an awesome addition to the park. Rougarou is up there in my top coasters at Cedar Point and if the line isn’t long for it I’m definitely not going to hesitate to give it a ride, like I would before when it was Mantis. So overall it’s not the flashiest addition this year, (that’ll be next year) but it’s certainly a good one!

There was a delay in the station for some TV filming.

Still love the way that incline loop looks over the water.
So a little bit about the floor now. To convert Mantis into a floorless coaster it wasn't as simple as changing trains. A retractable floor had to be built and here it is with the floor down.

And then lock in and now you can exit and enter the ride! Also notice the extra step right below the seats. This to my knowledge isn’t on any other floorless coaster and it’s because I believe these seats are still a tad higher than regular floorless coasters to match the intended center of gravity of Mantis. Pretty neat huh?

Our awesome Rougarou parking permit!

Rougarou media day was a great event as always, it was weird there was no morning press conference but instead this media day was all about the rides on Rougarou. You could get plenty of them if you wanted, it was a walk on all morning. Rougarou is a great addition to the park and definitely a huge upgrade over Mantis. Take a ride on it the next time you’re at Cedar Point!

So far Season Passholder night was a disaster. To be fair Dragster nor Maverick were listed as rides that would be open BUT rides that were not listed did open such as the train. And one big ride that was listed as supposed to be open was Millennium Force which showed no signs of life. The crews were at every ride training, they should’ve replaced Millennium with another ride. Well let’s continue on….

So not the biggest fan of Gatekeeper but it was one of the only coasters open, and because of that I believe we waited about an hour for it which personally I think is way too long. Though after getting off I was able to grab some awesome night shots of the area, so not all was lost.

So overall Season PassΒ Preview Night was kinda a waste. Good thing we didn’t drive up for just that or we would’ve been very disappointed. This is the first year the Cedar Fair parks have done the Season Pass Preview Nights and while some have gone good, most of them at other parks have been disasters as well. It’s neat to allow season passholders in a day early but hopefully next year they’ll work out some of the kinks. Now back to our beautiful room. πŸ™‚

Millennium Force is sporting new fiberglass bodies on the trains this year. Problem was yellow train was nowhere to be found on opening day, must’ve still been getting ready. So with a two train operation on opening day the line was a little long, however still totally worth it. Millennium is running great this year if not AMAZING! So far the fiberglass trains have made a world of difference on the ride, there’s no rattling and the ride seems so much smoother now. Always an amazing coaster and an even better one this year!

To cool off for a bit we went into the Red Garter Saloon where a band Yearbook was playing. It was neat to see that since the normal line up for shows for the summer was not ready yet that they brought in a band to come play for the weekend. Neat show.

Β The newly renovated Hotel Breakers is a huge win for Cedar Point. When staying there it truly does have the resort feel to it. Although the park was a little rough around the edges this year, I’m sure most attention was paid to the hotel in the off season, it’s still a great place to visit. I’m sure it will be in much better shape when we return for CoasterMANIA. So for now so long from Cedar Point and we’ll see you in a few weeks with a HUGEΒ update from CoasterMANIA!
