Knott’s Berry Farm 09/06/2015

Knott’s Berry Farm begins the two day event known as West Coast Bash, this is my second year attending West Coast Bash, and just like last year it looked like Knott’s had an amazing day lined up for us. Last year was the year of the redone Timber Mountain Log Ride and we got a tour of the ride and even got to walk in the flume. Plus the ride and refurbishment was incredible, so immediately after the log ride was completed rumors started swirling that Calico Mine was due for a refurbishment next. Well indeed that was the case and the event this year included a tour of the mine, so let’s check out the incredible day (as always) at Knott’s Berry Farm.

DSC07633
The day at Knott’s always starts bright and early but that means front parking spot!
DSC07635
No worries though, this crossing guard was making sure everyone was safe. Even though this was no traffic to be found. Impressive! haha
DSC07636
And here we are at the iconic entrance to Knott’s Berry Farm.
Ready for West Coast Bash to begin!

DSC07637
Oooh ahh Silver Bullet is so pretty, and still looks like an amazing paint job. Six Flags could take some cues from Knott’s on painting coasters. More on that later.

So let’s get started shall we. First stop is Calico Mine behind the scenes tour of the new refurbishment.
Bill Butler of Garner Holt (The company who did the refurbishment) was our tour guide.

Oooh track and wheels. 😛

First look at the rainbow room.
DSC07647
Some cave lighting, for the rainbow room.
DSC07649
Looking into the bottom of the glory hole, fun fact we learned the only way to get new animatronics into the bottom of the glory hole was through this passageway, it was the only way in and out of the glory hole. Garner Holt said this definitely made things tricky down there to work on upgrades.

It was a short neat tour, I’m sure the structure is very tightly packed so there’s not much room to move around in the mine but the little bit we did see was very cool. Now what’s up next?

DSC07650
Back outside I spot a log ride.
A Timber Mountain one at that!
A Timber Mountain one at that!
DSC07651
Timber Mountain log ride is incredible! I experienced the upgraded version last year for the first time and I was blown away. Now I never experienced the original version but I’m sure it was good too. Remember this is the ride that inspired Walt to build Splash Mountain at Disneyland, so I’m very glad Cedar Fair gave it the love it very much deserved last year with the upgrades it received. And you know me I always prefer the original so I can very easily say Timber Mountain Log Ride is by far my favorite log flume I’ve ever been on.

Took an early morning spin on the log ride and I’ll definitely be back for more later on..

Where's that steam coming from?
Where’s that steam coming from?
DSC07654
From the train of course!
DSC07655
Being able to walk around Knott’s Berry Farm in the morning when no one is in the park is definitely a very cool moment.
DSC07656
Who’s ready for some Silver Bullet?
DSC07657
Let’s take to the sky!
Climbing the lift!

Vertical loop.
Vertical loop looking just as awesome as it does on every other B&M invert.

Silver Bullet is one of my favorite B&M inverts, super smooth and packs a decent amount of force. Plus it has that super neat element that tilts the train after the vertical loop. Yeah it’s not as forceful as say Raptor or Batman but it’s a much more re-rideable ride than the older versions. Could ride this over and over again!

I think it's time to accelerate now!

DSC07663
Since Xcelerator was not part of the morning ERT session our group was first in line for the day when the ride opened.

One of the employees went for a test ride and looks like everything is clear to open.
And everyone is super excited!

DSC07666
Xcelerator is the precursor to rides such as Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point and the launch is just as incredible even if it’s not as fast.
Also the speed it has is pretty incredible.

A short ride but very fun indeed.

The ride launches you into a little bit of twisted track around the western area of Knotts.

You start off by going up the hill and into the tunnel and then back around. Short ride but definitely very unique.
I think it's time to get Sideways!

DSC07661
The trains and seats on Sierra Sidewinder are unique as well, with the riders sitting back to back and some spinning is definitely involved.
I didn't take many pictures of the ride because I was trying to ride as many rides as I could that morning, but here's one I did take that shows a little of the layout.

The seats are also a little small, but it’s a fun mine train family coaster.

Sadly yet again I did not take many pictures of the ride or the shuttle coaster in the area Montezooma’s Revenge. What was I thinking?!? Haha busy riding I’m sure but you’ll see Zoma from the aerial shots coming up so it’s not a complete loss. 😛

Calico Mine anyone?

During lunch we had Garner Holt talk to us about their work done on the mine and log rides at the park.
DSC07717
And in typical Knott’s fashion it was time to play some games.
DSC07719
There was even a little dance off.
No Thank You Knotts.

Sigh…. Ghost Rider which has been closed the past two West Coast Bash’s due to maintenance. Maybe sometime I’ll get to ride this.

Nothing to see here move along. haha They're actually getting ready for their Knott's Scary Farm stage show The Hanging, which is a big pop culture joke fest. Another thing I need to see live one day.

This park is not your typical Cedar Fair park it’s more along the lines of a Dollywood and Silver Dollar City in which there’s a lot more to see inside the park than just the rides.
DSC07724
Ghost Town is a city itself with plenty to see and do!
Did I mention the carriage rides?!?

DSC07732
At lunch we wrote on note cards questions to be asked. He also promises to read every single question asked, and he does.
DSC07735
Time for the jacket to come off let’s get to work.

Our lovely panel, most of them Knott’s Scary Farm managers and designers with Ride Operations team on the very right.

Timberline Twister! I got this credit last year and it was pretty intense for a kiddie coaster.
DSC07790
Beware not as mild as it appears.
DSC07788
This kids area is very scenic and one of the better ones I’ve seen.

Well goodnight Knott’s it’s been fun, until the next West Coast Bash!

Knott’s Berry Farm is one of my favorite parks, it’s different enough from all the other Cedar Fair parks that if you have a platinum pass and you haven’t been it’s worth the flight out to LA, plus all the other theme parks in the area! Can’t wait to ride the new dark ride the next time I’m at Knott’s. The park just keeps getting better and better! Next up day two of West Coast Bash at Six Flags Magic Mountain!
